- This edition of my poems, the first for an American publisher, selects work from 18 collections or pamphlets published between 1968 – 2017. There are also 16 new poems, collected here for the first time. The title poem describes an old Soviet Russian habit: people would carry with them a small string bag (an “avoska”) whenever they went out, hoping that perhaps a desirable product (or an essential one) would unexpectedly be available in the shops. My poem sees the avoska as a symbol of the possibility of transformation, and so connects to the enchantment of making poems.
Among the new poems there is a translation of Canto XXVII from Dante’s Purgatorio. It was commended in the Open Category of the Stephen Spender Translation Prize, 2010.
