- This article analyses the evolution of domestic morale across the regions of Austria-Hungary during the First World War. It explains the difficulties for the authorities of measuring morale, as well as the methods they used to maintain wartime patriotism in different parts of the empire. While the state proved quite efficient in terms of censorship, and had some effective support from patriotic journalists and film-makers, the article shows how, in the face of a severe food crisis and rising war weariness, even the most enthusiastic arguments had a diminishing effect amongst the civilian population.
