- Running to 365,000 words (775 pages), Volume I of the Longman Annotated English Poets edition of the poetry of Alexander Pope represents the culmination of more than ten years of sustained research effort. The preparation of the text involved the collation of up to ten separate printed editions of some poems, together with five substantial manuscripts (held in various US and UK libraries), altogether totalling more than 6,000 lines of verse and related prose. The extensive headnotes and explicatory annotation draw extensively on the last sixty years of Pope scholarship and embody a significant and substantial amount of original research.
