- The first comprehensive study of British music celebrating St Cecilia since that by Husk in 1857, this book draws extensively on primary sources (music manuscripts, letters, books, sermons), many not heretofore scrutinised, in order to present this tradition in a detailed socio-historical context. The book offers the first explication of the origins of London Cecilian celebrations and their spread to provincial towns and cities. Lesser-known Cecilian odes are examined (including extensive musical examples from unpublished works) in order to offer critical judgements on their quality and to contextualize the tradition in which well-known works by Purcell and Handel were created
