- This paper presents a novel approach for modelling delamination-tolerant composite structures with embedded through-thickness reinforcement (TTR). The key novel aspect is the rapid beam-based theoretical approach for the TTR, accounting for mixed-mode delamination. This research was funded by Rolls-Royce plc. The modelling strategy proposed here has been implemented in the commercial finite element software LS-DYNA via user-defined subroutines and transferred to Rolls-Royce through the InnovateUK funded £18M CTI-FAN (113085) and the £33M FANTASTICAL (113190) research programmes. This LS-DYNA implementation will be used to design Rolls-Royce’s next generation "UltraFan" composite fan blades.
