- This monograph, the culmination of over five years of sustained research effort, makes important contributions to the scholarly field, by its empirical findings and its theoretical analysis.
It provides a detailed historical reconstruction of a case study of penal policy-making, drawing on over 60 research interviews conducted with senior policy makers, supported by the collection and analysis of supporting qualitative data.
It also makes an important theoretical contribution to the sociology of punishment: analyzing the role of risk and populism in penal policymaking. It draws on a wide range of literature, synthesizing criminological theory, legal analysis and political science literature.
