- Ward co-edited the entire volume, co-authored the Introduction, and co-authored the final chapter, which takes the form of a critical ‘Q&A’ with world-renowned visual artist Eric Dyer. The anthology consists of chapters derived from a Society for Animation Studies conference entitled The Crafty Animator (2017) - contributions were drawn from speakers at that event.
The rationale for the anthology was to examine fundamental questions about the nature of ‘craft’ and the ‘handmade’ in animation. Although there is a wealth of published material about making animation, this is still predominantly within the ‘how to’ paradigm; this volume is the first of its kind to rigorously reflect on the historical and theoretical importance of craft and the handmade in relation to animation production.
The book’s chapters variously deal with notions of animation labour, authenticity and the relative and perceived commercial and artistic ‘value’ of ‘craft’ and the ‘handmade’ in a range of animated contexts – from experimental work to more mainstream media franchises. In this respect, the volume locates its overarching discussion within a wider set of debates within Animation Studies and sets the agenda for future research in the field.
