- The monograph derives from several periods of sustained international archival research in Martinique (Musée Régional, Bibliothèque Schœlcher, Archives Départementales), the Harry Ransom archive in Austin (Texas), the Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris), and the Archives Nationales d’Outre-Mer (Aix-en-Provence). It presents an original argument which was dependent upon the completion of a lengthy period of data collection and investigation of materials.
