- This book tells a story larger, richer and more diverse than its chronological and institutional coordinates suggest. Based upon unique access to previously unseen materials in the National Theatre archive, it demonstrates how Shakespeare in 1960s and 1970s Britain both reflected and shaped the contemporary reimagining of the classical canon, and its interactions with new drama, the nation, and its contested versions of culture and heritage. Accessing the backstory of the productions and performances on public record, it accounts for Shakespeare and the new National Theatre as vital components of a search for common cultural and theatrical ground.
