- Collaboration between Aberdeen and the Wageningen University, supported by the Royal Dutch Chemical Society, which has nurtured several PhD studentships. Classified by the journal as 'Hot paper' in the Liquid Crystal theme. One of the few materials showing the twist-bend nematic phase (discovered in 2011), and the first example of a supramolecular compound showing it. The stabilisation of the molecular geometry by hydrogen-bonding adds crucial information on how to prepare new twist-bend materials and how to develop supramolecular chirality from achiral molecules. The outcomes have been used by groups from 28 different countries working on multidisciplinary materials science and chemistry.
