- Double-weighted statement
- The book is the product of five years' international research. It involved extensive analysis of petitions found in thirteen volumes of the Registra Supplicationum in the Vatican Archivio Segreto, which have not been published or edited for the regions and period under discussion in the book. It also utilised unpublished documents from the Vatican Registra Vaticana and Registra Avenionensia series, as well as from archives in Venice, Genoa, Paris, Weimar and Munich. The range of its argument and research, involving Latin and Italian manuscript sources, as well as English, French, Italian and German literature, underlines the request for double-weighting.
