- András Visky’s Barrack Dramaturgy: Memories of the Body is a critical anthology of landmark plays by Transylvanian-Hungarian author András Visky, juxtaposing plays in English translation with critical and contextualising studies and production histories. Komporaly devised the concept for the volume and invited all contributors, coordinated their work and liaised with the playwright and publisher, editing the book, revising the translated playtexts and authoring two of the critical essays.
This volume is embedded in contemporary performance studies and is unique in its focus on an innovative playwright who has not yet been written about in English. Offering an insight into the playwriting and dramaturgical processes of András Visky, this book addresses the cultural, literary and performance context of his work and provides a definition of the concept ‘barrack dramaturgy’. It also addresses the impact of this concept on Visky’s career and on contemporary theatre practice, whilst examining some of the interactions between European, Anglophone and Asian theatre and performance traditions.
This publication is significant because it formulates a conceptual model for the notion of ‘barrack dramaturgy’ and illustrates its practical application with reference to case studies from Visky’s dramatic output. The volume brings together academic writing — by focusing on scholarly introductions to Visky’s work — and the field of stage translation — by including revised English versions of Visky’s plays and a survey of their international productions to date. In addition, the book gives voice to theatre-makers who staged Visky’s plays and to the playwright himself — including a specially commissioned foreword, major interviews and the original manifesto of “barrack dramaturgy”.
