- Double-weighted statement
- The slice-history approach of this 277-page monograph (c. 110,000 words) was predicated on the need to balance detailed study of unfamiliar source material with broader thematic concerns. Primary sources studied in Vienna for the three periods included music manuscripts, coeval printed music, iconographical material, and rare books and journals not available in the UK or online. While previous research visits to Vienna had informed the outlook and ambition of the volume, most of the targeted material was studied during a focused two-year period of study leave funded by the Leverhulme Trust, during which the volume was substantially written.
