- Single metal atom catalysts supported on different substrates are of great interest in catalysis, but proving the existence of isolated single metals is challenging. The significance of this paper is that it presents a combined first principles modelling and microscopy study to conclusively prove the existence and stability of isolated single Ta atoms on a TiO2 substrate. This approach will be valuable to probe if a purported single atom catalyst synthesis has actually resulted in a single atom catalyst, allowing the field to move towards realistic single atom catalysts. Result of international collaboration with Northwestern-USA through an SFI US-Ireland project.
