- This book draws on ffrench’s longstanding familiarity with the work of Roland Barthes, focused in this instance on comprehensive analysis and interpretation of the multiple references to cinema across the 5 volumes of his complete works. Given the prominence of Barthes in film criticism and theory since the 1960s it also involved significant research into a substantial corpus of secondary literature, and into the contextual detail of Barthes’ involvement with cinema. A series of arguments are developed based on close reading of significant texts on cinema, but also on photography. The research process also brought to light new material.
