- The book investigates the illegitimate relationships and offspring of the northern English nobility and gentry, in considerable depth, e.g. chronologically from the mid-fifteenth century to the mid-seventeenth century, challenging existing periodisation of this type of study. The primary sources studied are very extensive and complex, in repositories across the north of England and nationally. They vary widely, from church court records to material generated by estate administration, from the secular courts to literary sources.
