- GIRLFANS is at the forefront of a new wave of platforms and initiatives championing underrepresented female fans in the Premier League and English Football League. McAssey’s ongoing ethnographic study of supporters is presented as a series of exhibitions, photo-books and artefacts, bringing new perspectives to female fandom, inclusivity and equality within football culture. The works and subsequent micro-networks that have evolved through the creation of the works, have impacted football culture both socially and politically, informing the equality strategies of Premier League clubs through internal initiatives for staff, and by advocating for female fan activists to successfully campaign for free sanitary products at over 100 football stadiums via GIRLFANS’ social platforms. McAssey’s publications and artefacts are held in the Victoria & Albert Art Library, the British Library, National Football Museum, and have been acquired by The FA, the Football Supporters’ Federation and Fans for Diversity. In 2019, McAssey was invited to curate a photo-book and exhibition depicting Burnley FC’s female fanbase for the inaugural British Textile Biennial. Related conference presentations on GIRLFANS, included: Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool (16/03/17); Manchester City Football Club, Manchester (16/06/17); Upfront and Onside: The Women’s Football Conference, (the first international conference dedicated to women and football), National Football Museum, Manchester (08/03/18); The Modern Matchday Experience at Printworks, London, part of Jumpers for Goalposts Festival (04/08/19); and Football, Feminism & Everything In-between: Institute of Curious Minds at Lost Village Festival, Lincoln (25/08/19). The research has gained significant media attention and has been reported through a broad range of channels: Sky Sports TV, LFC TV, GQ, Vogue and The Guardian. GIRLFANS' Twitter feed and website have been web archived by the British Library as being of cultural importance in the field of sport, soccer and fans.
