- The research for Haunting Modernism was conducted over a nine-year period, and makes original contributions to knowledge in at least three primary yet intersecting critical fields: Gothic modernisms, mourning modernisms, and haunting studies. The argument’s complex theoretical framing draws extensively from the thought of Jacques Lacan and the later writings of Jacques Derrida. In turn, these theoretical perspectives are triangulated with an expansive range of modernist texts by such well-known writers as Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot and Wyndham Lewis as well as more overlooked works by Richard Aldington, Elizabeth Bowen, Ford Maddox Ford and D. H. Lawrence.
