- The output Antoine Caron: Drawing for Catherine de’ Medici is a curatorial project consisting of an exhibition (The Courtauld, London, 18 January-15 April 2018) and its accompanying catalogue.
The portfolio is composed of :
A catalogue Gottardo, ed., Antoine Caron: Drawing for Catherine de’ Medici, (The Courtauld/Paul Holberton Publishing, 2018) including an essay (2600 words) and catalogue entries authored by Gottardo (5500 words total).
A dossier illustrating: research carried out in preparation for the curatorial project; installation views showing how the research was communicated through the exhibition; reviews; programme of a study day.
The curatorial project aimed at showcasing the Valois series of six drawings by the French Renaissance artist Antoine Caron (1521-99); this was the first ever exhibition solely dedicated to the artist's drawings. The series celebrates the French royal family, the Valois, and highlights the role played by Catherine de’ Medici (1519-89), Regent and Queen Mother. These drawings showcase the way in which Catherine promoted her legacy through lavish court festivals designed to project the power and status of her family.
The motivation behind this project was to reunite for the first time this group of drawings - two of which are in The Courtauld collection - and subsequently to clarify their connection with the eight Valois tapestries (Uffizi Galleries, Florence).
Gottardo’s research :
- Helped to clarify the dates of the drawings in relation to the events described in the drawings and the related tapestries, and those described in contemporary texts.
- Elucidated the patronage behind the commission of the lavish tapestry series.
To achieve this, Gottardo collaborated with the eminent curator of French Renaissance drawings at The Louvre, Dominique Cordellier, also a contributor to the catalogue, and set out to examine many of Caron’s drawings held in French public collections. Fourteen drawings featured in the exhibition.
