- This project was initiated in a commercial project (Swan Morton, Sheffield) and expanded in a TSB Smart project (No. 720113) in developing the heat treatments of ultrahigh strength steel. It led to collaborative research and two KTP projects (Nos 009091 and 010269), a PhD project (Tinsley Bridge Ltd). Within the work a new XRD method to quantify plate and lath martensites of hardened medium-carbon steel was developed and applied. The novelty of this paper is an experimental method to separately measure the volume fraction and carbon content of co-existing martensite sub-phases.
