- The film What will you do now, John? explores the representation of the real and the ordinary in narrative animation. The film, set in the suburbs of a large western city, is about a man whose wife leaves him. . Anxious about his routine being disrupted by her disappearance, he pretends that his wife still lives with him. He gradually builds a fabricated world from which his ‘real’ wife is excluded.
What will you do now, John? is informed by the representation of social realism in literature and film and explores how similar representations of everyday life might be expressed through animated fiction. The subject of the narrative was determined by participant observation research. This ensured that the protagonist’s motives and reactions were informed by, and were particular to, his socio-cultural context. The film presents the scenario but leaves the audience to interpret the events. It suggests that the properties of animation might be employed to interrogate the notion of social truth and explore the politics of domesticity.
