- Alsford’s monograph is of sustained research effort and is a complex piece of research since it is the first to challenge historical orthodoxy in Taiwan historiography. The primary sources used within the book was complex and in multiple languages. The book in its entirety, presented a critical insight and is the completion of a lengthy period of data collecting. The research within has gone onto inform other work being done on the period in Taiwan.
