- Reports on a method for automatic subject metadata generation for digital libraries using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), whose deep and uneven hierarchies are challenging for automatic subject indexing. Major output of a transatlantic collaboration between USW, the MIMAS Data Centre based at University of Manchester and Drexel University, funded by the 2011 Digging into Data Challenge (IMSL/JISC/AHRC/ESRC). The inter-disciplinary collaboration afforded an evaluation based on a gold standard created by a trained librarian. Method has application in wider DDC settings, eg cited in context of Swedish language automatic classification with DDC (DOI 10.2478/jdis-2020-0003).
