- Comedy and Distinction explores the relationship between social class and comedy taste, demonstrating how new generations of the British middle-class display their cultural distinction through the careful consumption of ‘legitimate’ comedy. The book is based on mixed methods research conducted between 2009 and 2012; First, a bespoke survey of comedy taste distributed to a stratified random sample of 1000 consumers at the Edinburgh Fringe; second, 24 in-depth interviews with survey respondents; third, linguistic textual analysis of reviews of five different comedians in five publications at the 2009 Fringe; fourth, 'go-along' participant observation with 9 comedy scouts at the 2012 Fringe.
