- This key work of 3,701 pages (three volumes published in five) is the fruit of a double Wellcome Trust Investigator Award (Swain PI on the Warwick grant). Published in Brill’s flagship Handbook of Oriental Studies series, it constitutes a standard work of reference in the fields of Arabic literature and History of Medicine and offers a complete, annotated translation along with a new edition of the celebrated history of medicine by the Syrian physician Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿah (d. 1270), together with several introductory essays. Swain had 1/3 responsibility throughout the five volumes for editorial material/work.

Swain had 1/3 responsibility throughout the five volumes for editorial material/work as follows: vol 1: xx+500; vol. 2.1-2.2: xv+1467; vol. 3.1-3.2: xv+1664) for all editorial material and work incl. bibliography and indexes; he is specifically responsible for vol. 1 ‘introductory remarks’, 1.7, vol. 2.5, vol. 3.1 (⅓), 3.2 (½), 3.3 (⅓), 3.4 (½), 3.5, 3.6 (½).
