- The idea for this project was a direct consequence of the research undertaken on the AHRC funded "Scilly Voices: Language and distinctiveness on the Isles of Scilly" (PI: Emma Moore, 2012-2015). Building upon an established research cluster at the University of Sheffield (initially established by Professor Joan Beal), this externally-funded project focused upon the relationship between language and place. Moore developed an informal international research network on this topic (which was formalised by the edited volume). The co-editor, Chris Montgomery, was approached because of his expertise in perceptions of language and place and in methodological approaches to its study (expertise which contrasts with Moore's in variationist sociolinguistics and ethnography). Both editors contributed equally to the volume: with Moore initially soliciting the papers in Parts 1 and 3, and Montgomery those in Parts 2 and 4. Subsequently, both editors reviewed all papers, and shared equally in making the book coherent. Moore led on writing the introduction (writing the first draft) and solely authored Chapter 12, which presents research from her AHRC-funded project.
