- This monograph is the culmination of ten years of research into performance venues for popular music. Published in the USA, but distributed internationally, the book is the first architectural history of popular music performance space, describing its beginning, its different typologies and development into a distinctive genre of building design. The cross-disciplinary research that underpins this work was supported by a British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship (2012/13) and other external and internal grants. It utilised extensive interviews with stakeholders (building designers, owners and managers, music promoters, musicians and audiences), building visits and archive and library study over the past decade.
