- This article, in Italian, investigates Leonardo da Vinci’s cartoon showing the portrait of Isabella d’Este (now in the Louvre) and its thus far unexplained early use as a gift by Isabella’s husband Francesco II Gonzaga. Thanks to new archival research, this article unravels the political context for the gift in 1501-1503 and argues that the cartoon was offered to the Queen of France as a token of allegiance at a fraught time for the Mantuan ruling couple, who feared a Venetian invasion and needed to secure French protection. The article focuses on female networks and gift-giving as a diplomatic practice.
