- This research is the first IEC60870-90-5 standard compliant phasor measurement unit (PMU) implementation with security features. This has not previously been available in commercial PMUs. This secure PMU technology enables electrical grid operators to securely integrate older, inherently insecure, PMUs into modern networks. The approach has been successfully validated against data captured from real environments. Consequently, this research led to an additional £400k funding from GCHQ/NCSC, partnered with Statnett the Norwegian transmission grid operator, and making a prominent contribution to Phase 2 and 3 research in the ongoing multi-million pound UK national research Institute ‘RITICS’.
