- As editor of this third volume I was following the structural design of the two series editors, but was given autonomy in
the selection of companies from this period. The companies were selected to demonstrate most clearly the key
developments of this period which I identified and charted in the first two substantive introductory chapters to the
volume. These decisions gave the book a particular shape, and I requested from each contributor emphases within each
chapter that were distinct from the previous two volumes, despite the received structural format. I requested each author
to highlight, as appropriate to their case study, the centrality of European partnerships, the influence of New Labour's
social agenda and the movement from the fringe to the mainstream of key aesthetic trends such as immersive theatre,
physical theatre and technological and textual innovation. Drafts of my own introductory chapters were shared with
contributors to enable them to map their studies onto the key developments I was charting and to cross-reference
between them, and I was involved in substantial editing of each of the chapter drafts to maintain consistency between
them and coherence with the overall narrative of the volume.
