- This monograph was the fruit of numerous years of research. It utilises unpublished, archival sources and printed primary sources, as well as qualitative interviews with eye witnesses. Condemned as a fascist putsch in the East and praised as a 'people's uprising' in the West, the uprising of 17 June 1953 shook East Germany. Drawing on interviews and archive research, this book examines East German citizens’ memories of the unrest and reflects on the nature of state power in the GDR. The book is of particular relevance for historians, but appeals to the broader audience interested in the GDR as well.
