- This work contains a 95,000-word introduction and an edited text of 340,000 words. It is the product of a decade’s work in ten archival repositories in three different countries. Establishing the edition required considerable work in comparing and transcribing manuscripts and verifying their authorship, and in identifying and verifying references and allusions in the text (including 2000 legal references). Further extensive archival and bibliographical work was needed to obtain biographical information on Gilbert, to locate his work on law, history and philosophy in its wider context, and to trace which fragments of his work were published in unattributed formats.
