- In this “theoretically provocative and empirically rich” book [review by Donatella della Porta], the author assesses how much influence social movements have on EU policy and the means through which influence is secured. Using wide-ranging case studies of campaigns from GMOs to water rights to Internet freedom, it elucidates the important differences between technical and political campaigns, which turns on the extent of popular mobilisation. The analysis also considers how far literature on social movements applies at the EU level, where campaigns may appear to be unusually well organised but short-lived. 210 pages
