- The book is around 100,000 words in length and contains 75 music examples and 15 tables. It considers over 50 eighteenth-century compositions, 11 of which were unpublished at the time of writing and were reconstructed from eighteenth-century hand-copied orchestral parts for the purpose of analysis. Libraries and archives in the UK, Germany, Italy, Denmark, and the Czech Republic provided copies of these materials. The methods adopted in the book include source studies, historical musicology and music analysis of several theoretical types (form-functional theory; schema theory; Sonata Theory). Two appendices and a glossary of analytical terms are provided.
