- The research for this book spanned 14 years, from 2000 to 2014, with intense periods of Tanzania-based fieldwork between 2011 and 2013 when extended interviews and recorded discussions were conducted in English and/or Swahili. Written communication in the form of letters and emails between the author and informants became primary sources for the research, which drew upon ten archives in Tanzania, the United Kingdom and Italy. Over 550 secondary sources informed the desk-based research, which included an in-depth analysis of required reading for the 1949-1952 Edinburgh Ordinary M.A. Degree in anthropology, history, law, philosophy and political economy.
