- Double-weighted statement
- This substantial monograph qualifies as a double-weighted output because of its scale (96,300 words, 344 pages, 244 illustrations), its lengthy gestation (5 years), and its pioneering nature (depth and originality of coverage). It is the first serious study, in any language, of Qarakhanid architecture in Central Asia, including archaeological material and inscriptions in Arabic and Persian. It required the sourcing of numerous hard-to-find early Soviet-era publications, as well as extensive fieldwork over the course of several years, to all the former Soviet Central Asian republics, and often to very inaccessible sites. Fieldwork was also conducted in Iran.
