- Respiratory disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, caused by inflammation in the lungs, is a top 5 leading cause of death worldwide. This inter-disciplinary paper by immune cell scientists and control system engineers uses mathematical modelling to reveal for the first time the beneficial effects of a Chinese medicinal herb on inflammation resolution. This fundamental scientific advance, studied in an in-vivo system, has been recognised by world leading respiratory scientists as paving the way for the development of new types of anti-inflammatory drugs that target neutrophil reverse migration (commentary by Lucas, Hoodless and Rossi, Science Translational Medicine, doi/org/10.1126/scitranslmed.3008666).
