- This volume is the result of a conference organised by Beardmore and Dobbing titled Living the Family in 2016. Steven King was invited to join us in editing the volume. We realised that there was a need for a book which explored the history of the family more widely than had previously been considered. This volume brings together a range of scholars working on a variety of aspects of family history taking both a historical and anthropological viewpoint. As a result of the conference a number of the speakers were invited to submit proposals including Poertner, Price, McIlvenna, Monks, Taylor, Cannon and Riddell. The idea behind this volume was to explore the depth and composition of nominal kinship and to produce a volume which as a collective endeavour set out to reconstruct those networks. As a volume it sought to explore the concept of family in a broader framework than had previously been considered and raise awareness of the presence and formation of different family groups. Beardmore was instrumental in the editing process working closely with the other editors to ensure that the volume reads more as a monograph than a collection of conference papers. Beardmore contributed not just to the overall editing of the volume and its formatting to the Cambridge Scholar’s template but also to the jointly written introduction (pp. 1-19). Besides working alongside the authors to help frame their chapters Beardmore contributed her own chapter based on her own research, ‘Balancing the Family: Edward Wrench, Baslow G.P., c.1862-1890’ (pp. 113-134).
