- This work places design patterns into a software engineering framework centred around quality-evaluation metrics that can be used to identify weaknesses and (equally importantly) suggest improvements, This provides an alternative to the traditional (and non-scalable) "shepherding" approach to pattern design involving a more experienced designer. It moves pattern-based design away from being an art and more towards being engineering while remaining lightweight and flexible. The approach is demonstrated by evaluating a well-known design pattern in information security, identifying several flaws and suggesting possible actionable items to address them.
