- Turbulence is not well understood; the effect of turbulence on a free-surface even less so. We present a fundamentally new way of understanding free-surface dynamics that allows us to decompose surface behaviour and investigate turbulence based on measured free surface dynamics. The work led to successful applications for further funding (EPSRC EP/R022275/1, STREAM IDC EP/L015412/1, A*STAR Research Attachment Programme), and collaboration with new industry partners (Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, US EPA). The paper was awarded the 2019 Harold Jan Schoemaker Award for best paper in the Journal of Hydraulic Research during the period 2016-2019.
