- Understanding the sustainability of biofuels is important in deciding on transport decarbonisation policies. This RAEng report, commissioned by DfT/DECC, and informed by many interviews with industry participants in the UK, US, Brazil and Australia, analyses several hundred life-cycle studies and makes recommendations for sustainability assessment methodologies to be used by policy makers. It makes definitive UK policy recommendations including increasing the level of biofuels required under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation. 4.75% at time of publication (2017), it is now 10% (2021) (https://www.ukpia.com/downstream-oil/fuels/low-carbon-fuels/). It was widely reported in the press (BBC, New Scientist) and specialist media (Eco-Business, Rocket News).
