- This is a substantial monograph (105,000 words) in a prestigious series in the field of postcolonial literary studies. The book significantly advances the hitherto underdeveloped interface between postcolonial studies and the Arab world. It addresses four national contexts in historical detail and with reference to several literary authors and cultural theorists. In addressing four different (post)colonial histories, the book teases out tensions between nationalism and national community and contextualises the buildup to the so-called 'Arab Spring'. Finally, 10% of the book is a significantly expanded and reworked version of material published in an article and submitted for the previous REF.
