- This volume offers a wide-ranging, multi-faceted and critically nuanced account of the history of the French foreign legion from its foundation in 1831 to the present day. It is based on extensive archival research and the detailed analysis of significant source texts, many not previously subjected to critical scrutiny. It embeds its reading of the historical and contemporary significance of the Foreign Legion in a thorough-going analysis of French and European political, military and colonial history, constructing in the process a multi-layered critical re-evaluation and demystification of an often misunderstood institution.
