- This is an edition of Caroline of Lichtfield (1786). Kirkley’s textual apparatus consists of an introduction, and four appendices, including material excised by the original translator and restored with an accompanying translation by the editor. Kirkley was also responsible for choosing copy text (there are two editions), and thinking about presentation (punctuation etc). Thorough annotation identifies the translator’s additions and provides a record of textual variants between the first edition of the translation (which is the authorial copytext) and two other editions published in the translator’s lifetime. The edition thus demonstrates scholarly rigour and pays important attention to the translator’s practices. There is a list of textual variants at the end of the edition, and the decisions made about presentation are well explained. There is also a bibliography and chronology.
