Centring on the unacknowledged homosexuality of the film-maker's father, My Private Life 1 & II offer an autobiographical study of families and their secrets, and an investigation into fraught memories. The films explore how the hybrid strategies of experimental documentary help mediate memories, using multiple voice-overs in different tenses, including the retrospective voice of the film-maker/ daughter. This aural layering conveys multiple coexisting temporalities, adding texture and complexity to a traditionally linear and authoritative documentary narrative voice. Found footage intensifies the sense of past spilling over into present.
In My Private Life II footage from the earlier film is re-edited through split screens: family members appear in separate spaces, triggering a reevaluation of the previous film’s discourse and pressing viewers to reflect on their changing interactions with the screens. Daniels thus represents herself as an autobiographical fiction, suggesting the rich possibilities of self–reflexivity for the exploration of social relations.
