- This is the first study on the emergence of the eugenic movement in Hungary and its connections to similar movements in Germany and the USA. This in-depth analysis, based on a wide range of primary sources hitherto unknown even to specialists in Hungarian history, explains the wide appeal of eugenics and Hungary’s place in global eugenics. This challenges old-fashioned assumptions about eugenics as a right-wing, conservative ideology by exploring the movement’s progressive and leftist origins. It demonstrates the impact of WWI in the radicalisation of eugenics. Finally, it familiarises historians of Central and Eastern Europe with other methodologies and interdisciplinarity.
