- This monograph is the first book-length study of the 'first generation' of the Arab Nahda (c. 1830-1875). It was researched and written over eight years, between 2012 and 2019. The book is based on a wide range of Arabic print books and periodicals, many of them difficult to locate, supplemented by research across several archives in the Middle East, Europe and the USA. Most of the texts examined had never previously been the subject of sustained scholarly analysis: in particular, the book contains the first English-language study of a pioneering Arabic utopian novel, The Forest of Justice (1865).
