- This 220-page single-authored monograph addresses politically complex and religiously sensitive controversies as to the legality and legitimacy of force within Islam. It demonstrates that orthodox depictions of jihad as entirely self-defensive or aggressive are based upon fictitious and monolithic understandings. To develop a contextual analysis of jihad, the work incorporates material from law, history, theology, politics and international relations. On account of its extensive interdisciplinary content, the monograph was written over a period of five years. It comprises four separately publishable chapters, which generally explore the sources, contentious interpretations, historical dynamics, and contemporary practices of Muslim just war.
