- This detailed evaluation of ‘Gypsy’ policy between 1871 and 1933 was dependent upon the completion of a period of data collection and investigation in German archives spanning nine years. The research involved the collection and analysis of a large body of material, including government correspondence and police reports from Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Hannover, Mecklenburg Vorpommern and Lower-Saxony. For the national picture to emerge eleven archives were consulted in total. An extensive study of the published police literature on ‘Gypsies’ and of contemporary press coverage was also undertaken as part of the project.
