- Double-weighted statement
- This monograph (pp. 272; 82,000 words) is the result of a ten year research project that has included studying over 2,200 serial film instalments (very few of which have received any previous academic attention), work in archives in London and across the United States and detailed analysis of recently digitalized publications. The monograph includes five chapters, each equivalent to a journal article, and a comprehensive appendix. Its in-depth analysis of the film serial between 1930 and 1946 is combined with a broader discussion of seriality that includes nineteenth-century print and early-twentieth-century cinema.

- Additional information
- A preliminary version of Chapter 2 (pp. 40-71) was previously published as an article submitted for REF2014. The chapter is a development of the article rather than a repetition, with a different structure, drawing on new research, and extending the discussion beyond the article's exclusively American focus. Chapter 2 represents c. 13% of the entire book (pp. 246; 82,000 words). The remainder of the book (Introduction, 4 further chapters, Conclusion and Appendix) consists of new material not previously submitted for research assessment.
